Why GPHHS? Building a Strong Publishing Platform for Public Health Practice and Health Systems Research

Abstract

This editorial presents the vision and justification for launching Global Public Health Practice & Health Systems (GPHHS) as a scholarly platform for rigorous, policy-relevant, and practice-oriented research. It argues that public health and health systems scholarship must do more than generate knowledge; it must also inform implementation, improve service delivery, strengthen institutions, and support equitable decision-making in real-world settings. While many journals publish public health or health systems research, fewer are explicitly oriented toward the intersection of methodological rigor, operational relevance, and policy usefulness. GPHHS is established to help bridge that gap. The editorial emphasizes the importance of publishing work that explains how programmes function in practice, why interventions succeed or fail in specific contexts, and how systems respond to constraints, shocks, and reform efforts. It outlines the journal’s scope, editorial standards, and commitment to transparency, research integrity, and practical relevance. The piece concludes that stronger public health outcomes require publishing spaces that treat evidence, implementation, and health system performance as deeply interconnected.
